…On Rare Victory.

Vanderbilt, where I went to college, just beat Kentucky. That’s our sixth win this season. That makes us bowl-eligible for the first time since 1982.

1982. That was 26 years ago.

In other words, Vandy’s going to go to a bowl game for the first time during my lifetime. And as I’m an alumni, I’m going to go ahead and assume I’m older than any of the players – who are, after all, current students. So all those players have just earned their school’s first bowl game of their own lifetimes.

I’m going to make another assumption: they’re all very, very, excited right now and feeling very, very proud of themselves. Good for them. They should be feeling that way!

…On Who Ya With.

My alma mater won again tonight, beating Auburn 14-13 at home to go 5-0, 3-0 in SEC play. Very, very sweet. Very satisfying.

Also, I spent most of the game on the phone with my dad, talking about the game, so that was cool.

It’s still to early to be thinking about a bowl game, but… I sure would love it if Vandy goes to one. Especially one close enough to here for me to try to go to it.

…On Today’s Victory.

When I was your age, we never started the season 3-0 – certainly not with a win over South Carolina in the mix.

And certainly not by shutting someone out the whole second half! That, more than anything, was always Vandy’s undoing while I was there: just not having the roster depth to keep from crumbling in the fourth quarter.

Of course, trying to actually field a team of amateur student-athletes in a conference that’s openly a professional league treating itself as being to the NFL what AAA-ball is to the Major Leagues doesn’t help, and with schools that instead of doing their duty and taking the Boston University approach to cheating, get caught about once every decade facilitating it doesn’t help with that whole winning record thing.

Anyway. Rice 21, Vanderbilt 38. Nice and undefeated so far.
